Well, if you do, then you're reading the right blog entry, because I am going to tell you something about food markets...
| Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria |
Markets in Barcelona for many people are just tourist attractions, but they actually serve the neighbourhoods. Of course there are many tourists visiting those places, but being in Barcelona and not going to one of them and not trying anything, means missing out a big part of the city's soul.
Some of the markets, like La Boqueria and St Antoni, are old markets that have been in operation for many years. As you can read on La Boqueria website it first started as an open-air market, which are still popular in different places around the world, serving products from local traders. In the age of supermarkets importing food from the other end of the world, sometimes it's good to have a change.
Why am I writing about it? Well, the point is, that markets sell fresh and mostly local ingredients. Fish, meat, cheese, fruit, vegetables, olives... I am going to touch a bit on the topic of politics, but hey - it's good to support local farmers. Plus, answer one question: which tomato would you rather eat - the one that travelled to your city for a week, or the one that was picked up from a field in the morning?
If you love food and cook by yourself (by food I don't mean fastfood) I'm guessing, and that is rather an educated guess, that you care about the quality of the product. Well, if so, try to find a local market in your area, go shopping and compare.
If there is no market in your neighbourhood, check where your supermarket gets the products from. It might be that they are local!
Why am I rambling about it? You might say it's just a vegetarian's talk but do try it from time to time - you'll taste something different and do good for your own health.
The photos I've taken come only from La Boqueria. Mercat de St Antoni is currently undergoing renovation. Of course there are other markets, which I will gladly visit soon.
